Israeli Social Workers Arrive in U.S. to Study on N.c.j.w. Fellowships

Nine Israeli social workers have arrived in the United States on National Council of Jewish Women Overseas Fellowships for graduate study in this country, the organization announced today. Each NCJW Fellowship is valued at about $3,800. Winners contract to return to work in their own Jewish communities overseas at the completion of their Fellowship studies.

Dr. Dina Feitelson of Jerusalem, originator of a new method for teaching reading skills to immigrant children, is the 200th recipient of such fellowships. She will now spend the year as a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago. Gertrude Koslovsky, regional director in Haifa for the Rehabilitation Division of the Ministry of Defense, will study administration of social agencies and public welfare at the New York University School of Public Administration.

Drora Portugall, supervisor of Kindergartens in Tel Aviv, is returning to the Teachers College of Columbia University, where she earned B.A. and M. A. degrees, to work for her doctorate. Shlomo Achituv, district supervisor in the Youth Division of the Education Ministry in Haifa, will study educational administration at Teachers College. Yitzchak Bakal, Chief Social Worker in Tel Mond Prison, will study techniques for helping “hard core” youth offenders at the Columbia School for Social Work.

Meir Dori, Social Worker in the Youth Division of the Tel Aviv Welfare Department, will take advanced studies in social work at Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Tova Friedman, psychiatric social worker at Geha Hospital, will continue her studies at the Tulane University School of Social Work in New Orleans. Aliza Nissenbaum, a specialist in the education of deaf pre-school children at the MICHA Guidance Center, will study at the Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis. Miriam Reich, a social worker in the Probation Department for Adults in Jerusalem will study social work at the University of California in Berkeley.
