Israeli-Syrian armistice talks were resumed today at Mahanaim, in northern Israel, with hopes for speedy signature of the armistice agreement strong.
A draft agreement was reached last week but last-minute difficulties arose over boundary demarcations. These, it is now believed, have been overcome following the recent visits to Damascus and Tel Aviv of Brig. Gen. William Riley, chief of staff to the United Nations acting mediator for Palestine.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas was permitted to pass through Jerusalem’s military lines today on his way here to attend a dinner in his honor at the American Embassy. Justice Douglas will address a conference of educators at the Haifa Technion this week before returning to Jerusalem from whence he will continue his tour of the Middle East.
The S.S. Kedmah today disembarked 350 Jewish immigrants at Haifa. Also aboard the Israeli transport when she docked were Prof. Selig Brodetsky, newly-elected president of the Hebrew University, and the widow of the late Col. David Marous, who accepted an invitation from the Israeli Government to visit the Jewish state.
