The Israeli-Transjordan mixed armistice commission met today for seven hours in a discussion of agenda subjects, including the reduction of military forces in the Jerusalem area as well as in the regions of Latrun and Mt. Scopus. No results were achieved.
The Israeli position with regard to the status of Jerusalem will be outlined before U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson by Israeli Ambassador Eliahu Elath within a few days after he reaches Washington, it was reported here today.
Ambassador Elath was due to arrive in the United States today from a brief visit to Israel. Aubrey Eban, chief Israeli delegate to the United Nations, left Israel yesterday and was due to arrive in New York during the week-end. During their stay in Israel they participated in discussions with Premier David Ben Gurion and Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett at which decisions on major international issues were taken. These issues will come up for discussion at the forthcoming session of the U.N. General Assembly in September.
Owing to “extreme pressure” of work in the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Dr. Walter Eytan, director-general and head of the Jewish state’s delegation to the Lausanne peace conference, will not return to Switzerland, where the Arab-Israeli peace negotiations were formally resumed on Monday following a recess of several weeks. It was announced today that Eliahu Sassoon and Reuven Shiloah, members of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, will proceed to Lausanne shortly.
