Israeli War Heroes to Tour 41 States for U.j.a.; Special Trains to Visit 150 Cities

Seven Israeli war heroes will arrive here this week to make a nationwide tour of the United States aboard special trains which will four the country for three weeks beginning April 3 on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal, it was announced over the week-end by Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chair-men of the U.J.A.

The Israelis will act as guards of honor aboard seven “Caravans of Hope”–special trains which will visit 41 states to bring the message of the United Jewish Appeal and its agencies to more than 150 cities. The soldiers, all frontline veterans, have been selected for this mission on the basis of their war records, Morgenthau said. They have been given special leave by the Israeli Defense Ministry, subject to recall if necessary.

Earlier, it was announced that a total of $1,171,450 was contributed during the first week of the U.J.A.’s 1949 drive by less than 200 contributors at the first fund-raising meetings held in three major cities. This sum represents the results of Initial “Big Gifts” meetings in Baltimore, Cincinnati end Pittsburgh, it was added.
