Mrs. Rose L. Halprin, acting chairman of the Jewish Agency, said on her return from Israel today that “Israelis almost without exception believe that the United States holds the key to peace in the Middle East.”
Mrs. Halprin, who attended a plenary session of the Jewish Agency executive in Jerusalem, said that she found the mood in Israel to be one of “sober realism.” “The people fully realize the dangers of the situation created by Czech arms shipments to Egypt and there is great anxiety,” she said.
“The big question is, what America is decision will be on Israel’s request for defense arms to restore the balance of military power. Everybody is convinced that a favorable decision can avert war. Nasser will be tempted toward peace if. Israel’s defenses are bolstered–not necessarily gun for gun and tank for tanks, but with sufficient defense equipment to make the outcome of an attack on her an uncertain factor, “Mrs. Halprin said.
