The planting of trees in the Jerusalem demilitarized zone near United Nations Truce Supervisory headquarters continued today without Jordanian interference. There was no indication that Jordan would carry out a threat to enter a formal complaint with the UN Security Council about this “Israel aggression.”
The tree-planting is part of an Israel program to create a green belt on the outskirts of new Jerusalem. Israel Foreign Ministry officials admitted that the planting area was part of a zone designated as “no-man’s-land” in the Israel-Jordanian Armistice pact but pointed out that in a subsequent agreement, the zone was divided for civilian purposes.
The Israel spokesman, noting that Jordan has built a road in the zone, denied any basis existed for a Jordanian complaint.
