Israel’s role in the conference was emphasized by the fact that the head of Israel’s large delegation, Education Minister Abba Eban, is one of the three senior vice-chairmen of the parley. There are 103 countries represented at the conference. The significance attached to the conference by leading nations was attested by the fact that the United States and the Soviet Union sent more than 100 participants each, most of them leading scientists.
Today, a famous American-Jewish scientist, Dr. Jerome Weisner, scientific adviser to President Kennedy, read the opening paper on the need for aiding the scientific maturation of underdeveloped countries.
