Two Israeli officials have urged the public to support the independence and freedom of radio and television broadcasting. Shlomo Avineri, Director General of the Foreign Ministry, said the matter was a serious one, especially during a change of government. He said Israel’s autonomous Broadcasting Authority was established in the belief that radio and television should not be controlled by government.
Avineri spoke at memorial services marking the first anniversary of the death of Haim Yakhil, former chairman of the Broadcasting Authority. Yitzhak Livni, Director General of the Broadcasting Authority, spoke in a similar vein at a meeting of its 32-member board. He urged resistance to any attempts by the government to tighten control over broadcasts.
