Israel’s ambassador to the United States said the Iranian threat is among the worst Israel has ever faced.
In an address Friday to the biennial convention of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Sallai Meridor said that Israel has not faced such a danger since the Six-Day War in 1967. He said Iran can still be deterred from acquiring nuclear weapons, but time is short.
“We are on the very [cusp] of having those genies getting out of the bottle,” Meridor said. “And if we allow those genies to get out of the bottle, we are leaving our children and the world in a different place. If we don’t act today — literally today — then their tomorrow won’t be a dream, it will be a nightmare.”
Meridor compared the danger to the Nazis in the 1930s and warned his audience not to make the same mistakes as previous generations.
“We have seen the writing on the wall,” he said.
Meridor also expressed thanks to the Conservative movement for providing his daughter with the chance to have a bat mitzvah in Israel and giving his elderly mother her first aliyah to the Torah.
