George C. McGhee, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, today, paid tribute to Arthur C.A. Liverhant, First Secretary of the Israel Embassy, who has served here since before the state was proclaimed. At a luncheon tendered Liverhant by Ambassador Abba Eban and attended by members of the diplomatic corps and high government officials, Mr. McGhee said that Liverhant was “one of the principal media of relations with the emergent state of Israel.”
The Assistant Secretary of State told the gathering that Israel is to be congratulated on the “fine calibre of people” in its diplomatic service. He said Israel diplomats “compare very favorably with those of countries which have been in the business for generations.” The luncheon was also a welcome for Miss Esther Herlitz, former chief of the North American desk of the Israel Foreign Ministry, who will replace Liverhant.
