Israel’s Health Ministry said it is unlikely that a Birthright Israel participant who died of meningitis after returning to the United States spread the disease to others with him in the group. Joseph Ferraro, 20, of Rochester, N.Y., had been touring the country under a program that gives young Jews free 10-day trips to Israel. Hillel: The Foundation for Campus Jewish Life, which helped bring Ferraro to the country, notified everyone on the trip who had close contact with Ferraro to see a physician.
