“The Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Israel will have to emphasize much more than do most American medical schools the social aspects of medicine,” Dr. Harry Grundfest, Associate Professor of Neurology at Columbia University, declared here today.
Speaking at the Academy of Medicine under the auspices of the Hadassah and the Medical Advisory Board, Dr. Grundfest said that the great emphasis must be placed on social medicine because “great segments of Israel’s population come from lands where they were either subjected to the trauma of the recent horrors of Europe” or to the “endemic starvation, oppression, degrading poverty and ignorance” of the Middle East and North African ghettos.
Other speakers included Dr. Brock Chisholm, director general, World Health Organization, United Nations; Dr. Leo Davidoff, neurosurgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital and chairman of the World Health Organization-Unitarian Service Committee Medical Mission to Israel; Mrs. Samuel J. Rosensohn, national president of Hadassah and Dr. Israel Wechsler, chief neurologist of Mount Sinai Hospital. Ground will be broken for the new Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center on June 5 in the Ein Karem sector of Jerusalem.
