The Heletz oil field and the Zohar gas field, in the southern part of Israel, will supply 25 percent of the country’s fuel needs by next year, geological experts said today. The oil field is expected to supply about ten percent, and the gas field about 15 percent of Israel’s fuel requirements.
Plans have been drafted for the construction of a 72-mile pipeline to carry the Zohar gas to the electric power plant at the Mediterranean port of Ashdod. The plant now consumes about 200,000 tons of oil annually. The pipeline, will cost 5,000,000 pounds ($2,800,000). It will carry 100 billion cubic meters of gas annually–the equivalent of 300,000 tons of oil. The present proven gas reserves at the Zohar field are equivalent to 3,000,000 tons of petroleum.
