Israel’s population was estimated at 3.49 million at the end of 1975, the Central Bureau of Statistics announced Some 85 percent of them were Jews–2.953 million and 537,000 non-Jews. The population increased in 1975 by 69,000 (2 percent compared to 2.3 percent in 1974). The Jewish population increased by 51,000 (1.8 percent compared to 2 percent in 1974) and the non-Jewish population grew by 18,000 (3.5 percent, compared to 4 percent in 1974).
The increase in Israel’s population was due entirely to natural growth. The number of immigrants and emigrants (yordim) was more or less the same–around 20,000, and aliya did not have an affect on the increase of population, according to the Bureau study.
