Both Prime Minister Levi Eshkol and Foreign Minlster Golda Meir commented directly here today on the proposals for Arab-Israeli peace talks made by President Habib Bourguiba of Tunisia.
Speaking at the Center on Foreign Affairs of the Mapai party, Mr. Eshkol repeated an assertion he made last Sunday to the effect that the best solution of the Arab refugee problem is for their settlement “among their brothers in Arab states.” Complete “repatriation” in Israel for the Arab refugees, numbering more than 1,000,000 according to some figures, was one of the points advanced in Mr. Bourguiba’s peace formula.
Mrs. Meir said, at the same meeting, that there is only one solution that could prevent Israeli resort to military action on the Jordan River water issue. That solution, she said, is Arab reversal of the decision to divert the headwaters of the Jordan. On this point, Mr. Eshkol added that Israel’s “strength continues to grow.”
