Israel’s president has invited his Syrian counterpart to visit and talk peace, but Damascus said no. Moshe Katsav’s offer to Bashar Assad was not immediately endorsed by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, leading Syria to complain that the invitation was insufficiently formal. Syrian Cabinet minister Buthaina Sha’aban told CNN Syria needs a “serious response” to Assad’s statement to The New York Times that he is willing to hold peace talks with Israel.
