The National Religious party was reported today to be lobbying strongly for appointment of an observant Jew to the Israeli Supreme Court, after the legal committee of the Parliament recommended an increase in court membership from nine justices to 10.

Exerting pressure both within and outside the coalition Government, the party claimed that, since the death five years ago of Prof. Simcha Asaf, the Orthodox section of the population has had no representation on the high court.

The campaign gained momentum from the recent Supreme Court decision requiring the Interior Ministry to register the civil marriage in Cyprus between an Israeli Jew and a Belgian Christian woman.
