Israel’s chief representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Joseph Tekoah, will return here for consultations which will begin early next month, the Foreign Ministry announced today. (It was reported at UN headquarters in New York today that the General Assembly will postpone its scheduled Sept. 17 opening for one week and will not begin general debate for an additional week. General debate is the series of major policy addresses made at the fall session by top delegates. Including many foreign ministers. The delay was reportedly requested by the 66 nation Afro-Asian bloc.)
Meanwhile, a heated debated appeared to be shaping up for next Sunday’s Cabinet meeting where Prime Minister Levi Eshkol and Foreign Minister Abba Eban will report on their talks with the American diplomatic mission headed by Ambassador George Ball and with McGeorge Bundy, president of the Ford Foundation and a confidant of President Johnson. The debate was expected to center around Mr. Ball’s reported efforts to persuade Israel to relax its demand for direct negotiations with the Arabs and accept some other form of contact through the UN peace envoy, Ambassador Gunnar V. Jarring.
