League circles were closely watching today anti-Jewish developments in Rumania, expecting the issue to be raised at the January session of the Council if Premier Goga proceeds with the reported anti-Semitic measures.
Protesting against the threat of the new government of Rumania to limit or suppress the civil liberties of the Jews, the Executive of the World Jewish Congress sent identical telegrams to the British and French Governments.
It pointed out that steps of this nature, if carried out, would be in violation of the Minorities Treaty of Dec. 9, 1919, guaranteed by the League of Nations, and that article 12 of that treaty makes it a duty of members of the League Council to take necessary steps in case of violation.
It was learned in London that Congress delegations have already been received by the British and French foreign offices with respect to the threatening situation for the Jews of Rumania.
Paris reports said the French Government is notifying the Rumanian Government that it will actively support before the League of Nations action against Rumania’s projected anti-Jewish ordinances as violating her minorities obligations.
