It is stated by the Headquarters here of the Oze that a new epidemic of malaria began to spread at the end of 1923 over south and south-west Ukaraine. The epidemic raged with particular violence in the Jewish colonies, especially in the districts of Cherson and Odessa. 83,000 cases were registered. Of these 36.2% were in the district of Cherson, 22.2% in the district of Odessa, 13.9% in the district of Balta. 11.9% in the district of Nikolaiev, 8,8% in the district of Elizabetgrad, and 6.1% in the district of Pervomaisk.
The percentage of persons suffering from malaria in the Jewish colonies is greater than the average in the various districts. In one of the Jewish colonies 1,060 persons have been stricken with malaria out of a total population of 3,300. The epidemic has increased in the present year.
Measures are being taken to fight the epidemic. The O.Z.E. is sending to the affected districts a large consignment of quinine. It is also establishing five malaria stations, two in the district of Cherson, one in Elizabetgrad, one in Nikolaiev and one in Balta.
