A pledge that the Italian Government would “fight for the complete equality of all citizens” was voiced here today by Paolo Amigio Taviani, Minister for Internal Affairs, at the seventh annual conference of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities. Among the items on the convention’s agenda are proposals for the amendment of Italian laws regarding the Jewish community.
Mr. Taviani was only one among other members of the Italian Cabinet attending the ceremonies at the opening of the three-day convention at Barberini Palace. President Giuseppe Saragat sent a special message to the convention, and Mr. Taviani pointed out that the President had conferred on the central Jewish organization the Gold Medal for civil merits.
The proceedings were opened by Judge Sergio Piperno, president of the Union. Forty-two delegates from Italy’s 22 Jewish communities, which have a total population of 35, 000 Jews, are participating in the convention. Other items on the agenda, in addition to an effort to improve Government laws relating to Jews, are the problems of anti-Semitism and assimilation in this country, Jewish education and Jewish culture.
