The Vatican organ Osservatore Romano today published the text of a recent speech by Adeodato Cardinal Piazza, Patriarch of Venice, in which, following the example of Milan and Bologna prelates, he proclaimed the dangers of racism and neo-paganism. Opposing the universal doctrine of the Church to racist theories, the Cardinal denied any scientific basis for the latter, declaring they constituted “morbid applications of materialism.” Turning to the Jewish question, he recalled the example of St. Peter who, he said, never closed his door to his former coreligionists.
