Vicenza, the city where Luigi Luzatti, Italy’s famous Jewish prime minister, established the first cooperatives and people’s banks, has honored him with a monument. Alberto de Stefani, former minister of finance in Mussolini’s cabinet, who was the chief speaker at the ceremonies accompanying the dedication of the monument, lauded Luzatti’s patriotic services to Italy.
Luzatti, who became minister of commerce and agriculture when he was only 28, was one of Italy’s most distinguished statesmen and economists, his policies saving the country from bankruptcy on several occasions.
