Italian Foreign Minister Gaetano Martino has backed the proposals put forward by United States Secretary of State John Foster Dulles for a solution to the problems of the Middle East. The Dulles proposals were made in a foreign policy address last month and set forth basic American approaches to current tensions in the Middle East including border guarantees and the resettlement of Palestine Arab refugees.
In a speech concluding the debate on foreign policy in the Italian Parliament, the Foreign Minister said that Mr. Dulles’ address had been listened to with “sympathy” and he added that “we believed it to coincide with the general interest as well as with our own policy.” He emphasized his belief that “all initiative aimed at reducing local tension should be attentively and willingly considered by the parties concerned. We hope and believe that a sense of responsibility and a prevailing spirit of moderation will allow a peaceful settlement to be achieved.”
