Gaetano Martino, Italian Foreign Minister, who made his first courtesy call on Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold today, admitted after that meeting that among other things they had discussed the Middle East. Mr. Martino said he had asked the Secretary General for the latter’s impression of the current Middle East situation.
Echoing a remark yesterday by Italy’s President Giovanni Gronchi, Mr. Martino said that Italy is a “good friend” of the Arab countries as well as of Israel and is probably in as good a position as any country in the world to be trusted by all parties involved in the Middle East situation.
