Many young Jews have joined Italian formations fighting the Germans in North and Central Italy, according to a report appearing in La Stampa Libera, organ of the Free Italians in Switzerland.
Other information reaching here from Italy states that the Nazis have arrested a large number of Jews in the territory they hold, including about 800 in Rome. Many Roman Jews are believed to be hiding in the homes of friends in the Vatican City. Nazi papers received here disclose that Jews in Trieste and Fiume have been ordered to display yellow Mogen Davids at the entrances of their homes, while an unconfirmed report declares that a large number of Jewish refugees, mostly from Venice, have arrived at Algerian ports as have 18 Jews who fled from the Island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese.
Another report states that British troops occupying the city of Calabria found an internment camp in which fifteen Czechoslovakian Jews had been confined since some time in 1940. These Jews are said to have been stranded in Italy en route to Palestine when Mussolini declared war in June, 1940.
A dispatch from Istanbul states that members of Italian fascist organizations, with the assistance of Germans, attempted to precipitate anti-Jewish and anti-Allied riots there, but were quickly dispersed by the police, who arrested the ringleaders.
