The Union of Italian Jewish Communities has protested to the Foreign Ministry against an attempt by Syrian officials in this country to halt the export to Syria of goods produced in plants owned by Jews. The Union pointed out to the Foreign Ministry that such action would violate the Italian Constitution.
The protest followed the denial of invoices for goods exported by a firm owned by a Jew. The owner had refused to accede to the Syrian request that his “baptismal certificate” be appended to the request for invoices. The Italian Government stopped a similar attempt by the Saudi Arabian Government last year.
