The nomination for mayor of Prof. Giorgio Le Pira, internationally known for his sponsorship of Mediterranean Colloquiums here at which Jews and Arabs have met for informal discussions of their common problems, was assailed here today by neo-fascist groups.

Leaders of the Movimento Sociale Italiano, came here from Rome for the specific purpose of protesting against the formation of a demo-Christian-Socialist majority in Florence’s city council. Prof. Le Pira, who had been instrumental in the formation of the coalition, was nominated for the mayor’s post.

The fascist meeting, which had been scheduled for the largest theater in Florence, was canceled when the owner changed his mind about leasing it to the group.
