Italian Prime Minster Ciriaco de Mita will make an official visit to Israel on April 23 at the invitation of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir. De Mita’s visit is a reciprocal trip for the one Shamir paid to Italy last year.
An announcement by de Mita’s office said the prime minister would be accompanied by Foreign Minister Giulio Andreotti. A spokesman said no details were yet available about the program.
Italy has close relations both with Israel and Arab states, as well as with the Palestine Liberation Organization, and has long tried to serve as a mediator in the Middle East conflict.
