Several prominent Italian newspapers have made the Rumanian crisis the springboard for demands that Jewish refugees be prohibited by law from settling in Italy.

Il Popolo of Trieste declares that “Italy must not be made the dumping ground for Jewish immigration.” Il Telegrafo of Livorno warns Italian Jews that an influx of their co-religionists would be dangerous. La Stampa of Turin, commenting on Rumania, raises for the first time the issue of a numerous clauses in Italy, asking that only one Jew to each 800 students be admitted to universities.
