The Italian Chamber of Deputies went on record this week-end as favoring all moves aimed at ending the state of belligerence between Israel and Egypt. The move came on a resolution by an Italian deputy which stressed that Israel’s sovereignty must be guaranteed to assure the Israel people a peaceful life.
This action followed a three day visit to Rome of Israeli Foreign Minister Golda Meir who conferred with the President, Premier and Foreign Minister of Italy. During an hour-long meeting with Premier Adone Zoli, Mrs. Meir underlined Israel’s fears of trouble in the Middle East and its desire for peace. Her meetings with President Giovanni Gronchi and Foreign Minister Giuseppe Pella were also marked by cordiality.
Commenting on her visit, the official Italian news agency ANSA reported that “although the Italian Government does not intend to assume the role of mediator, as has been repeatedly stated in Parliament, it is true that Italy does not want to fail in her international duties as a vehicle of good intentions aimed at building a durable peace. In this sense Mrs. Meir’s Roman meetings will undoubtedly be useful.”
(Landing in Tel Aviv this week-end, Mrs. Meir told newsmen that she was well satisfied with her talks with Italian leaders whom she found “understanding.”)
