A committee of leading Italian personalities announced today a meeting would be held here October 1 to discuss the situation of the Jews in Russia. Professor Arangio Ruiz, who heads the committee, said that the situation of Soviet Jewry had deteriorated in recent years.
“The situation, “he said, was viewed with concern and protest by every well-thinking person.” He mentioned Lord Bertrand Russell, the British philosopher, as an example of persons known for their sympathies for the international status of the Soviet Union who had nevertheless protested the treatment of Russian Jews. The committee includes left-wing Socialist Pierro Caleffi.
