Giorgia Tomasi, a 22-year-old musician from Italy, won the seventh Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition at the Mann Auditorium here Tuesday night.
Tomasi, the first woman to win the prestigious award, will receive the $10,000 Judges Prize plus $2,500 for the competitor most favored by the audience, which was determined by a poll taken while the judges deliberated.
The award was established by the Polish-born virtuoso, Arthur Rubinstein, who died in 1982 at the age of 95.
Tomasi was one of three finalists to emerge from a field of 40 contestants from 13 countries who began the grueling competition in Tel Aviv two weeks ago. She played Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
That also was the selection of runner-up Simone Pedroni, 24, also from Italy. Third prize was taken by Ilya Itin, 25, who is from Russia. He played Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
