A ban by Italian authorities on a Skinhead rally planned for last weekend did not deter several of the shaven-headed extremists from showing up.
Some 700 to 800 Skinheads from all over Italy and abroad as well had been invited to attend the rally, which was scheduled to run from last Friday through Sunday in a large open field just north of Rome.
Most of the Skinheads appeared to have changed their plans after authorities last week announced that the rally would not be permitted to take place.
But dozens, possibly unaware of the ban, still tried to reach the rally site, many of them traveling in a caravan of automobiles.
Police were out in full force, both on roads near the planned rally site and on local main highways. Dozens also patrolled railway stations.
Skinheads who tried to reach the rally site were turned back, and police escorted them onto the superhighway headed away from Rome.
