Italian Interior Minister Mario Scelba gave assurances today that police authorities had been instructed to take special precautionary measures to prevent anti-Semitic incidents coinciding with the trial of Nazi Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem.
The assurance was given by the official to Dr. Sergio Piperno, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, and Renzo Levi, vice-president when the two Jewish leaders visited Mr. Scelba to invite him to attend the opening of the Union’s Congress on April 30. The Minister said an official representative of the Government would attend the opening session.
The three men discussed the recent clashes between Jews and neo-fascists in Rome and it was during this conversation that the Interior Minister promised that the police would watch for anti-Semitic developments.
A survey of the Italian press indicated today that all Italian newspapers were giving a heavy and sympathetic coverage to the Eichmann trial. The lone exception was the official organ of the neo-fascist party, Secolo D’Italia, which has not printed a single line on the trial proceedings to date.
