The Italian Government has offered to accept 10,000 of the 25,000 Jewish refugees from Austria whom the United States is seeking to lodge temporarily in Italy, it was learned at the State Department today.
Talks are continuing in Rome in an attempt to reach agreement for acceptance of the full 25,000. A decision is expected within the next few days.
Acting Secretary of State Dean Acheson confirmed last week that the Italians had tentatively rejected the American request. Reasons given at that time by Italy were lack of adequate food and facilities to care for the refugees, although the American proposal specified that they be accommodated without cost to Italy.
