Official notice has been served on Jews that henceforth they would not be granted licenses to open any kind of business in Italy, including restaurants, cafes and other public establishments.
The notice, contained in a circular distributed to all prefects, does not affect enterprises already in existence except in so far as they will now be unable to open branches. Under the order, Jewish businessmen are also prohibited from transferring their licenses. The order bore the signature of Feruccio Lantini, Minister of Corporations.
Official statistics made public last night revealed that there are 57,425 Jews in the Italian Kingdom. The figures, compiled in the special census of August, showed that Latium has the largest Jewish population, numbering 12,943. Lombardy has 11,559 Jews, Julian Venetia 8,285, Tuscany 5,931 and Piedmont 5,439. Sardinia numbers only 67 Jews, Calabria and Luciana together, 34.
A list of 98 university professors who will leave their posts because they are Jews was published in the Vita Universities, organ of Rome University. The list covers all the principal universities in Italy. It will be expanded, the paper said, as soon as the racial antecedents of certain other professors are determined.
