Foreign Minister Giuseppe Pella, taking cognizance of repeated reports of Italy’s interest in mediating between Israel and the Arab states, said today that mediation could only be entered into upon the express request of the interested parties.
Peace in the Middle East, the Italian statesman continued, is a grave problem which must be solved within the regional framework. At this moment, he stated firmly, Italy is not mediating any issues, large or small.
