Many Jewish officers who had been dismissed from the army in connection with Italy’s racial legislation are being re-enlisted, it was revealed here today. Those returned to their posts include mainly doctors and engineers, in addition to a number of infantry officers. The move was a complete surprise to Jews, since in recent weeks Jews who had been called up with their classes had been sent home upon presentation of their identification cards.
Those who have been accepted for re-enlistment had also been called up with their classes, but instead of being rejected were asked if they would volunteer in case of need. It was hinted to the officers that their families would be accorded better treatment.
