Israeli circles here expressed satisfaction today with Foreign Minister Giuseppe Pella’s reiteration of Italy’s traditional friendship for the nations of the Middle East.
Addressing the Italian Senate before it ratified proposals for Italy to join the European Common Market and the Euratom program, the Foreign Minister denied that collaboration of the Atlantic Treaty nations would preclude ties in the Middle East. He pledged Italy to act as a cohesive, not a divisive force in the Middle East. Italy has been reported several times ready to act as a mediator between Israel and the Arab states, but has denied the reports.
