Italy said it would lead a U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon. Italy’s president, Romano Prodi, told U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Monday that Italy would be willing to lead the force, which is seen as crucial to efforts to prevent future Israel-Hezbollah violence. Annan is expected to make a decision on Italy’s offer this weekend, Prodi said.
