The Italian Government is apparently inclined to "overlook" the March 12 deadline for the enforced emigration of all post-War Jewish immigrants. It is understood that all who applied for extension of time will be permitted to stay until a definite negative reply has been received. The number of time extensions, ranging from a month to six months, has considerably increased in the last few days.
Meanwhile, the United States Embassy is still awaiting a reply to its numerous notes to the Foreign Office asking clarification of the status of American nationals with respect to the expulsion edict. The Embassy fears that an embarrassing situation may develop if the reply, when it comes, states that American citizens will be granted extension on request, since it is anxious to avoid the impression of recognizing discrimination against Americans by submitting such requests. Notes from the Swiss, French and British embassies have also gone unanswered to date.
