Italy’s president praised ethnic diversity during a visit to the synagogue in the northern city of Turin. Oscar Luigi Scalfaro has had numerous official and private contacts with Jewish leaders, but this was believed to be his first visit as president to an Italian synagogue. Turin has been the site of recent tensions between native-born Italians and Muslim immigrants.
