E. C. Mills, general manager of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, yesterday labelled as canards reports that Ivy Lee has been ousted as publicity adviser to the society.
“There has been absolutely no complaint against Mr. Lee,” Mills said. “He has been publicity advisor to this society for about two years. His work and character have been entirely satisfactory.”
Referring to Lee’s testimony before the McCormack Congressional Committee, in which the publicist admitted that he had advised the German government in respect to its rearmament and other policies, Mills said:
“We have gone over all of Mr. Lee’s testimony, and find that there is no basis for accusations that he supported any anti-Jewish or anti-Catholic movement. Had he done so, it is safe to assume that he would have been asked to resign.
“His conduct has been all right, as far as we are concerned.”
Mills said that almost eighty percent of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers is Jewish.
