An eye-witness account of the plight of Hungarian Jewish refugees in Austria will be presented to Jewish community leaders from all over the country at the 42nd annual meeting of the Joint Distribution Committee which will take place here tomorrow, and at which the JDC budget for next year will be announced.
It was stated today that prior to the influx of Jewish refugees from Hungary and the mass deportation of Jews from Egypt, the JDC leaders had decided that a minimum of $25,550,000 would be required for the organization’s 1957 relief activities in Europe North Africa and Israel. The eye-witness report on the refugees from Hungary will be made by Charles Jordan, director of JDC activities overseas.
Edward M. M. Warburg, JDC chairman, today indicated that Robert Murphy, Deputy Under Secretary of State, who is a featured speaker at the annual dinner, is expected to make a major address on American policy in the Middle East and in Eastern Europe. The other major speaker at the dinner will be Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the JDC, one of the world’s leading authorities on refugees and emigration problems, who returned recently from a survey of welfare needs in Europe and Israel.
