The Joint Distribution Committee, one of the participating groups in the United Jewish Appeal, announced yesterday through Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, chairman of the European executive council of the committee, an appropriation of $200,000 to guarantee the maintenance for one year of 1,000 homeless children who would be sent to Switzerland from France if such a rescue program materializes.
About 3,500 of the children are living in institutions in the formerly unoccupied area of France, funds having been provided for their maintenance in 1943; others are hiding in French Catholic and Protestant havens and some are in internment camps. After the war an attempt will be made to reunite them with their parents, if the mothers and fathers can be found alive, Dr. Schwartz said. He added that Switzerland would be willing to shelter the children if other governments, including the United States, would guarantee their eventual repatriation.
