During the first six months of this year, the Joint Distribution Committee has appropriated a total of $36,389,700 for its relief, resettlement and reconstruction programs, it was announced here today. The allocation for June was listed as $5,784,725. Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairmen of the J.D.C., said that during the first six months of 1948 the agency expended an average of $200,000 per day.
Responsibility for the care of 700 European Jewish children, formerly maintain-ed by Rescue Children, Inc., has been transferred to the Joint Distribution Committee, it was announced today following an agreement between the two organizations.
The children live in France, Belgium, and Sweden in ten child-care homes which, according to the agreement, will be integrated into the network of 382 institutions, housing 32,000 youngsters, now supported wholly or partially by the J.D.C. which at present extends assistance to 142,000 European Jewish youngsters. Rescue Children, Inc., has in a period of several years aided 2,200 children, many of whom are in Israel.
