Some 15,000 Jewish orphans and under-privileged children from half a dozen countries in Europe and North Africa are participating in the Joint Distribution Committee’s summer camp program, it was announced here today by the J.D.C. The first groups of children have begun leaving various cities for camps.
Morocco, where the J.D.C. is waging its most intensive campaign against hunger and disease among the country’s Jews, will be the scene of the biggest summer camp program. Almost 9,000 boys and girls will leave the slums of Casablanca, Marakesh and other cities for camps in the country. Another 3,000 children will escape the dirty ghettoes of Tunisia, Tangiers and Algeria for short periods this summer.
