Charles Jordan, European director-general of the Joint Distribution Committee, was elected today president of the overseas chapter of the American National Association of Social Workers. Mr. Jordan, who addressed the International Conference of Social Service here on refugee problems, said that World Refugee Year has not been an end “but a beginning of the solution of the refugee problem.”
The Arab and Chinese refugee problems, Mr. Jordan declared, “cannot be solved by social workers because political problems must be solved by political leaders. Social workers,” he said, “must advocate all means available to alleviate their present conditions.” The Egyptian delegate to the conference, according to reliable sources, was reported today to have withdrawn his participation upon learning that Mrs. Zena Harman, Israeli delegate, was named chairman of the pre-conference.
