The ninth annual conference of Joint Distribution Committee country directors concluded here today after five days of activity during which the directors and their aides evaluated the work of the agency in various countries during the past year and planned for the next year’s activities. This conference was the largest of its kind to date, with 118 delegates and visitors from countries on five continents participating.
Moses W. Beckelman, director general of the JDC, closing the parley, said that the year 1954 had seen advances in the rehabilitation and revitalization of Jewish life.
Speaking for the Conference on Jewish Material Claims, Mr. Beckelman warned the JDC officials against the “improper” use of Claims Conference funds, defining “improper” as that use of claims conference funds which substitutes for and discourages local fund-raising activities under the illusion that local efforts are no longer needed. Such a development, he stressed, can seriously weaken efforts at communal rebuilding.
